About the Department

DIATM started its journey in the year 2002. The Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities of DIATM can easily be called the SHAPERS. The Department comprises the Sections of Chemistry, English, Economics, Management, Mathematics, and Physics. Equipped with state of the art Laboratories, knowledgeable, caring Faculty Members, and diligent, sincere Technical Assistants, put all possible efforts to build up the solid base for students which make them able to receive core engineering skills later on. Distinguished academicians and persons with long exposure to industries frequently visit the Department to deliver lectures and interact with our students. Seminars, both inter and intra Departmental are organised periodically to stimulate their inquisitiveness and whet their appetite for knowledge. Veterans among the faculty members guide M.Tech and PhD project for the betterment of their junior colleagues. Our faculty members have several research publications to their credit. Some of them have even authored textbook for B.Tech and M.Tech students.

Dr. Sabyasachi Sarkar is currently chaired as Principal of Durgapur Institute of Advanced Technology & Management (DIATM) and Head of the Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities Department. He is an experimental particle physicist and presently collaborating on COMPASS++/Amber experiment at CERN, Switzerland. He also had participated on Sandwich Veto Detector development of COMPASS Phase-I Experiment at CERN. Headed by him the Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities regularly organize FDPs, seminars, short-term courses and workshops. The most significant one is the Series of National Seminar on ‘Recent Trends in Applied Sciences & Humanities’ (RTASH), organized regularly for last 7 Years. As the department is the gateway of engineering study, apart from the academic excellence, all the staff members are therefore aware about the added responsibility to acclimatize the students and to groom them for their future career. The rigorous classes of physics, chemistry and mathematics and related practical experiments helped them to fill-up the gap between their school and undergraduate level of education. In the same footing the regular soft-skill classes offered by highly skilled humanities faculty members helped them to improve their communication skills and personality as well.

The Department is also concerned about the students’ value education and organises periodic motivational seminars involving Hon’ble Swamijis from Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama.
